Director's Statement
From Director Kathy Bruner
Documentary filmmaking allows me to tell the stories of real people, and the artform can demonstrate the beauty and struggle of being human. My previous film, a feature called "Last Year at the Crossing," weighed heavily on me as a filmmaker. I wanted my next film to demonstrate the beauty and restorative power of art-making. In "The Art of Loss," my main subject, Laura, processes the loss of miscarriage through the mediums of printmaking, sculpture, and porcelain, even as I worked in the film medium and found it a source of healing for me. I’m deeply grateful to Laura and Eric for sharing their intimate story and to my creative collaborators Hannah Johnson and Josh Taylor for editing and sound design.
